People & culture

Build healthy organizations by strengthening the people systems that shape daily work.

We help nonprofits build people-centered organizations where staff can do strong work, leaders can lead effectively, and culture supports long-term mission sustainability. Our work focuses on the structures, practices, and team conditions that influence how people experience an organization every day.

Too often, nonprofit teams are carrying critical work inside systems that were built quickly, inherited over time, or never fully aligned to the organization’s current size, strategy, or values. Leaders may be navigating growth, role confusion, burnout, turnover, or communication breakdowns without the internal people infrastructure needed to support a healthy team.

This work is about helping organizations create stronger internal conditions so that culture, people systems, and team practices better support both mission and sustainability.

What this work includes

  • We help nonprofits understand how staff and leaders are currently experiencing the organization, including strengths, stress points, and areas where culture may be misaligned with values or goals. This may include surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, and artifact review, followed by practical recommendations for strengthening culture over time.

  • Healthy culture is reinforced through systems, not just intention. We support organizations in building or refining people practices such as onboarding, feedback structures, role clarity, team norms, communication expectations, performance support, and internal routines that help teams function more effectively.

  • Culture often rises or falls through leadership practice. We work with executive leaders, senior teams, and people managers to strengthen communication, feedback, team leadership, decision-making, and staff support so leaders are better equipped to build healthy and high-functioning teams.

  • Nonprofits are often asking people to do meaningful work under significant pressure. We help organizations think more intentionally about staff experience, workload sustainability, well-being, belonging, and retention so their teams are better positioned to stay engaged and effective over time.

    • Culture assessments using surveys, interviews, focus groups, and document review

    • Facilitated conversations to clarify team norms, values in practice, and working agreements

    • Manager and supervisor support around communication, feedback, and team leadership

    • Onboarding design and refinement for new staff, managers, or leadership roles

    • Role clarity work, including decision rights, responsibilities, and organizational alignment

    • Development of feedback, performance support, or staff reflection structures

    • Support for strengthening internal communication and cross-functional collaboration

    • Advising on staff retention, team sustainability, and healthy workload practices

    • Planning support during periods of growth, transition, or organizational change

    • Retreats or team sessions focused on culture, trust, alignment, and collaboration

  • We believe people & culture work should be practical, honest, and closely tied to how the organization actually functions.

We believe people & culture work should be practical, honest, and closely tied to how the organization actually functions.

Too often, culture work stays at the level of aspiration. Organizations name values, but struggle to translate them into daily practice. Leaders care deeply about their teams, but may not yet have the systems, habits, or support structures needed to create consistency across the organization. Staff may be deeply committed to the mission, while also feeling stretched, unclear, or disconnected.

That is why our approach focuses on both:

the lived experience of staff and leaders across the organization

the systems, routines, and leadership practices that shape that experience over time

We help nonprofits move beyond vague culture goals toward clearer, healthier, and more sustainable ways of working.

That is why our approach focuses on both:

    • the lived experience of students and adults

    • the structures, practices, and leadership moves that shape that experience

Our work is practical, relational, and grounded in the realities of schools.

  • Partners leave with a clearer understanding of their current culture, stronger people practices, and practical next steps to improve staff experience, team effectiveness, and organizational sustainability.

Depending on the scope of work, partners may also leave with:

    • a clearer picture of cultural strengths, gaps, and emerging themes

    • recommendations for improving communication, trust, and team alignment

    • stronger onboarding, feedback, or team support structures

    • greater role clarity and more effective internal collaboration

    • leadership tools for managing teams more consistently and effectively

    • practical strategies to support retention, morale, and staff sustainability

    • a more intentional connection between organizational values and daily practice

  • This work is a strong fit for nonprofits that are:

    • growing quickly and need stronger internal people systems

    • experiencing turnover, burnout, or team strain

    • trying to improve communication, role clarity, or cross-team collaboration

    • supporting new managers or strengthening supervisor practice

    • navigating transition, restructuring, or leadership change

    • rethinking how culture, staff experience, and sustainability connect to mission success

    • seeking a partner who can support both culture and operational people systems

How we partner

Our engagements are tailored to each organization’s size, structure, leadership context, and goals. Support may include a culture assessment, staff engagement process, manager development, retreat facilitation, people-systems advising, or a longer-term partnership focused on strengthening team health and organizational culture.

We work alongside nonprofit leaders and teams to build people practices that are realistic, mission-aligned, and better suited to the demands of the work.
